Why add matrices?

Aram has two branches of a stationery shop, one in Erbil and one in Duhok. Every weekend each branch writes its sales in a small table: the rows are the days (Saturday, Sunday) and the columns are the items (notebooks, pens, rulers). Each table is a 2×32 \times 3 :

To get the weekend total of the whole shop, Aram adds the numbers that mean the same thing: Saturday notebooks with Saturday notebooks (12+10=2212 + 10 = 22), Sunday pens with Sunday pens, and so on. That is exactly matrix addition:

Two matrices can be added only when they have the same order: the same number of rows and the same number of columns. Then you add the entries in the same position. For Am×nA_{m \times n} and Bm×nB_{m \times n} the sum is Cm×n=A+BC_{m \times n} = A + B with

This holds for every ii and jj. Written out in full, the sum looks like this:

This is the same “point by point” idea as adding two functions in Operations on functions: there you add f(x)+g(x)f(x) + g(x) at the same xx; here you add aij+bija_{ij} + b_{ij} at the same (i,j)(i, j).

Different orders: no sum

If the orders differ, some entries have no partner in the other matrix, so the sum is not defined. It is not zero, and you may not fill the gaps with zeros:

[123456]2×3+[123456]3×2\begin{bmatrix} 1 & 2 & 3 \\ 4 & 5 & 6 \end{bmatrix}_{2 \times 3} + \begin{bmatrix} 1 & 2 \\ 3 & 4 \\ 5 & 6 \end{bmatrix}_{3 \times 2}

This sum is not defined. Both matrices hold six numbers, but a 2×32 \times 3 and a 3×23 \times 2 matrix have different shapes.

AA is 3×23 \times 2 and BB is 3×13 \times 1. What is A+BA + B?AA 3×23 \times 2ـە و BB 3×13 \times 1ـە. A+BA + B چییە؟

Subtracting matrices

Subtraction works the same way: both matrices need the same order, and you subtract each entry of the second matrix from the entry in the same place of the first: Am×n−Bm×n=Cm×nA_{m \times n} - B_{m \times n} = C_{m \times n} with cij=aij−bijc_{ij} = a_{ij} - b_{ij}.

The notes' example: find A+BA + B, B+AB + A, A−BA - B and B−AB - A for

Worked example
  1. A+BA + BA+BA + B

    Add the entries in the same place.

    ژمارە هاوشوێنەکان کۆ بکەرەوە.

    A+B=[1+34+75+12+0]=[41162]A + B = \begin{bmatrix} 1+3 & 4+7 \\ 5+1 & 2+0 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} 4 & 11 \\ 6 & 2 \end{bmatrix}
  2. B+AB + AB+AB + A

    The same answer: for each entry bij+aij=aij+bijb_{ij} + a_{ij} = a_{ij} + b_{ij}.

    هەمان وەڵام: بۆ هەر ژمارەیەک bij+aij=aij+bijb_{ij} + a_{ij} = a_{ij} + b_{ij}.

    B+A=[3+17+41+50+2]=[41162]B + A = \begin{bmatrix} 3+1 & 7+4 \\ 1+5 & 0+2 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} 4 & 11 \\ 6 & 2 \end{bmatrix}
  3. A−BA - BA−BA - B

    Subtract each entry of BB from the entry of AA in the same place.

    هەر ژمارەیەکی BB لە ژمارە هاوشوێنەکەی AA دەربکە.

    A−B=[1−34−75−12−0]=[−2−342]A - B = \begin{bmatrix} 1-3 & 4-7 \\ 5-1 & 2-0 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} -2 & -3 \\ 4 & 2 \end{bmatrix}
  4. B−AB - AB−AB - A

    Every sign is the opposite of A−BA - B: B−A=−(A−B)B - A = -(A - B).

    هەموو هێمایەک پێچەوانەی A−BA - Bـە: B−A=−(A−B)B - A = -(A - B).

    B−A=[3−17−41−50−2]=[23−4−2]B - A = \begin{bmatrix} 3-1 & 7-4 \\ 1-5 & 0-2 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & 3 \\ -4 & -2 \end{bmatrix}

So for addition the order of the two matrices does not matter, but for subtraction it does.

With the same AA and BB, what is the entry in row 2, column 1 of B−AB - A?

Multiplying a matrix by a number

To multiply a matrix by a number kk (a ), multiply every entry by kk. The number may be positive or negative. The notes' examples:

2[4136]=[82612]−1[−41−35−6−2]=[4−13−562]2\begin{bmatrix} 4 & 1 \\ 3 & 6 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} 8 & 2 \\ 6 & 12 \end{bmatrix} \qquad -1\begin{bmatrix} -4 & 1 \\ -3 & 5 \\ -6 & -2 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} 4 & -1 \\ 3 & -5 \\ 6 & 2 \end{bmatrix}

A real use: a tea house in Sulaymaniyah keeps its prices in IQD in a matrix (rows: tea, coffee; columns: small, large). The owner raises every price by 10%10\%, which means multiplying the whole matrix by 1.101.10:

1.10×[50075010001500]=[55082511001650]1.10 \times \begin{bmatrix} 500 & 750 \\ 1000 & 1500 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} 550 & 825 \\ 1100 & 1650 \end{bmatrix}

Two special multiples are worth naming. −A=(−1)A-A = (-1)A flips the sign of every entry. And subtraction is really addition of a negative multiple: A−B=A+(−1)BA - B = A + (-1)B. With the matrices of the worked example, A+(−1)B=[1452]+[−3−7−10]=[−2−342]A + (-1)B = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & 4 \\ 5 & 2 \end{bmatrix} + \begin{bmatrix} -3 & -7 \\ -1 & 0 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} -2 & -3 \\ 4 & 2 \end{bmatrix}, the same as A−BA - B.

−A=(−1)A-A = (-1)A هێمای هەموو ژمارەیەک پێچەوانە دەکاتەوە. A−B=A+(−1)BA - B = A + (-1)B. A+(−1)B=[1452]+[−3−7−10]=[−2−342]A + (-1)B = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & 4 \\ 5 & 2 \end{bmatrix} + \begin{bmatrix} -3 & -7 \\ -1 & 0 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} -2 & -3 \\ 4 & 2 \end{bmatrix}، هەمان A−BA - B.

Summary

  • Add or subtract only matrices of the same order, entry by entry: cij=aij±bijc_{ij} = a_{ij} \pm b_{ij}. Different orders: not defined.
  • kAkA multiplies every entry by kk; −A=(−1)A-A = (-1)A and A−B=A+(−1)BA - B = A + (-1)B.
  • Addition is commutative and associative, A+O=AA + O = A, A+(−A)=OA + (-A) = O, k(A+B)=kA+kBk(A + B) = kA + kB; subtraction is not commutative.
  • The trace tr⁡A\operatorname{tr}A is the sum of the main diagonal; tr⁡(A+B)=tr⁡A+tr⁡B\operatorname{tr}(A + B) = \operatorname{tr}A + \operatorname{tr}B (the notes' unfinished property 7).
  • Matrix equations such as 2X+A=B2X + A = B are solved like number equations: X=12(B−A)X = \tfrac12(B - A).
  • kAkA هەموو ژمارەیەک لە kk دەدات؛ −A=(−1)A-A = (-1)A و A−B=A+(−1)BA - B = A + (-1)B.
A+O=AA + O = A، A+(−A)=OA + (-A) = O، k(A+B)=kA+kBk(A + B) = kA + kB؛ لێدەرکردن ئاڵوگۆڕ قبوڵ ناکات.
  • tr⁡A\operatorname{tr}A کۆی ؛ tr⁡(A+B)=tr⁡A+tr⁡B\operatorname{tr}(A + B) = \operatorname{tr}A + \operatorname{tr}B (تایبەتمەندیی 7ی تەواونەکراوی تێبینییەکان).

Can a 3×13 \times 1 and a 1×31 \times 3 matrix be added?

No. They have three numbers each, but different orders.

Why is A+B=B+AA + B = B + A always true? A+B=B+AA + B = B + A هەمیشە ڕاستە؟

Because it is true for every pair of numbers aija_{ij}, bijb_{ij}, and matrix addition works entry by entry.
