Inputs that are allowed, outputs that are reached

Every function f:X→Yf:X\to Y comes with three sets. The domain is the set of inputs. The codomain is the set in which the outputs are allowed to land. The range is the set of outputs that really appear.

هەموو f:X→Yf:X\to Y سێ لەگەڵە. .

Exam marks

Think of the function "student → exam mark" in a small class. The domain is the class: Aram, Shilan, Karwan and Dilan. The mark sheet allows every whole number from 0 to 100; that is the codomain. But the marks that really happened are only 85, 92, 85 and 70, so the range is {70,85,92}\{70,85,92\}, a small part of the codomain.

A teacher can change a mark later; a function's range is fixed by its rule and its domain. Also, the codomain is a choice: we could have chosen all real numbers as Y, and the range would stay the same.

Domain, codomain, image and pre-image

Let f:X→Yf:X\to Y. The set X is the domain of f, written DfD_f, and Y is the codomain of f. The unique y in Y that f assigns to an x in X is called the image of x under f, or the value of f at x, and is written f(x)f(x). In the other direction, x is called a pre-image of y.

با f:X→Yf:X\to Y بێت.

In the marks example, the image of Aram is 85. The mark 85 has two pre-images, Aram and Karwan, while 50 has no pre-image at all. That is the general picture: every x has exactly one image, but a y may have one pre-image, several, or none.

The range: all the images together

The range of f, written RfR_f, is the set of all images under f. It is also written f(X)f(X):

Rf=f(X)={y∈Y∣∃ x∈X: y=f(x)}={f(x)∣x∈X}R_f=f(X)=\{y\in Y\mid \exists\,x\in X:\ y=f(x)\}=\{f(x)\mid x\in X\}

Read: the elements y of Y for which at least one x in X gives y=f(x)y=f(x) (the symbol ∃\exists means "there is"). The second form says the same thing more briefly: collect f(x)f(x) for every x in X.

The range is always a subset of the codomain, Rf⊆YR_f\subseteq Y, and it can be much smaller.

Worked example: X={−1,0,1}X=\{-1,0,1\} and f(x)=x2f(x)=x^2نموونەی چارەسەرکراو: X={−1,0,1}X=\{-1,0,1\} و f(x)=x2f(x)=x^2

    f(−1)=(−1)2=1f(-1)=(-1)^2=1، f(0)=02=0f(0)=0^2=0، f(1)=12=1f(1)=1^2=1.

  2. Collect them in a set

    f(X)={f(−1),f(0),f(1)}={1,0,1}={0,1}f(X)=\{f(-1),f(0),f(1)\}=\{1,0,1\}=\{0,1\}.

  3. Notice the size

X has 3 elements but f(X)f(X) has only 2, because −1-1 and 11 have the same image. A set lists each element once.

The image of a subset

We can also feed only part of the domain into f. If A⊆XA\subseteq X, the set {f(x)∣x∈A}\{f(x)\mid x\in A\} is called the image of A under f and is written f(A)f(A). The range is the special case A=XA=X: Rf=f(X)R_f=f(X).

ئەگەر A⊆XA\subseteq X، {f(x)∣x∈A}\{f(x)\mid x\in A\} پێی دەوترێت A لە ژێر fـدا و بە f(A)f(A) دەنووسرێت. حاڵەتێکی تایبەتە کە A=XA=X: Rf=f(X)R_f=f(X).

Examples with f(x)=x2f(x)=x^2: for A={1,2,3}A=\{1,2,3\} we get f(A)={1,4,9}f(A)=\{1,4,9\}. For the interval A=[−1,2]A=[-1,2] we get f(A)=[0,4]f(A)=[0,4]: the smallest square comes from x=0x=0 inside A, and the largest from x=2x=2. It is not [f(−1),f(2)]=[1,4][f(-1),f(2)]=[1,4]: you must look at all of A, not only its ends.

نموونە بە f(x)=x2f(x)=x^2: بۆ A={1,2,3}A=\{1,2,3\} دەبێتە f(A)={1,4,9}f(A)=\{1,4,9\}. بۆ A=[−1,2]A=[-1,2] دەبێتە f(A)=[0,4]f(A)=[0,4]: بچووکترین دووجا لە x=0x=0ـەوە دێت کە لە ناو Aـدایە و گەورەترینیان لە x=2x=2ـەوە.

Finding the domain from a formula

Often a function is given only as a formula, such as f(x)=1x−3f(x)=\frac{1}{x-3}. Then its domain is understood to be every real x for which the formula gives a real number. This is called the natural domain. In practice, three things can go wrong:

Domain: we need (x−2)(4−x)≥0(x-2)(4-x)\ge0. The zeros are 2 and 4. Test numbers: x=0x=0 gives (−2)(4)=−8<0(-2)(4)=-8<0; x=3x=3 gives (1)(1)=1>0(1)(1)=1>0; x=5x=5 gives (3)(−1)=−3<0(3)(-1)=-3<0. The product is ≥0\ge0 only between the zeros, zeros included: Df=[2,4]D_f=[2,4].

Summary

  • For f:X→Yf:X\to Y: X is the domain DfD_f, Y the codomain. f(x)f(x) is the image of x (the value of f at x), and x is a pre-image of f(x)f(x).
  • The range Rf=f(X)={f(x)∣x∈X}R_f=f(X)=\{f(x)\mid x\in X\} is the set of all images; it is a subset of the codomain.
  • The image of a subset A is f(A)={f(x)∣x∈A}f(A)=\{f(x)\mid x\in A\}.
  • Natural domain: remove the zeros of denominators, demand ≥0\ge0 under even roots (>0>0 when the root is in a denominator) and >0>0 inside logarithms.
  • Range: build it from facts like x2≥0x^2\ge0, solve y=f(x)y=f(x) for x, or read the graph's shadow on the y-axis.
  • From a graph: the domain is the shadow on the x-axis, the range the shadow on the y-axis. A range can be a finite set, such as {−3,1,4}\{-3,1,4\}.
  • بۆ f:X→Yf:X\to Y: X ، DfD_f، Y . f(x)f(x) xـە (بەهای f لە xـدا) و x f(x)f(x)ـە.

Review questions
Can two different inputs have the same image?

Yes: f(−1)=f(1)=1f(-1)=f(1)=1 for f(x)=x2f(x)=x^2. Then the range has fewer elements than the domain.

بەڵێ: بۆ f(x)=x2f(x)=x^2، f(−1)=f(1)=1f(-1)=f(1)=1.

Which numbers are excluded from the domain of 1x2−1\frac{1}{x^2-1}?

1 and −1, the zeros of the denominator.

Why can a range never contain a number that is not in the codomain?

Because every output of f:X→Yf:X\to Y is by definition an element of Y.

چونکە بەپێی پێناسە هەموو f:X→Yf:X\to Y Yـە.
