In one minute on your phone you might watch a short video, listen to a song, look at photos and play a game. All of these mix text, images, sound, video and animation. When different media work together like this, we call it multimedia.

Lana is a media student at a university in Erbil. For her final project, she is making a ten-minute documentary about the old houses in Erbil Citadel.
First, she recorded the video on her phone in 4K, at 30 frames per second. She also recorded an interview with an old man who grew up in the citadel. 4K video is very big: her raw took up almost 40 GB.
Next, she edited the film on her laptop. She cut the boring parts, put transitions between the scenes and added subtitles in Kurdish and English. She also chose quiet background music, which she found on a free music website.
Then she exported the film as an MP4 file. During the export, the video was compressed, making the file much smaller. The final file was about 2 GB, and the picture still looked sharp.
Finally, she uploaded the documentary to a video platform. Now her classmates can it on their phones without downloading anything. If someone has a slow connection, the app lowers the quality automatically, so the film keeps playing.
'Multimedia is not only about technology,' Lana says. 'Good sound and a clear story matter just as much.'

Technical explanations often answer two questions: how? (the method) and with what result? English has short, neat patterns for both.

Resolution, frame rate, bitrate. Resolution is the number of pixels in each frame (1920 × 1080). Frame rate is the number of frames per second (30 fps). Bitrate is how much data is used for each second of video or audio, for example 5 Mb/s for a video or 128 kb/s for an MP3. With the same format, a higher bitrate usually means better quality and a bigger file. How fast your connection can carry that data is its .
Container and codec. MP4 is a container: one file that holds video, audio and subtitles together. The codec is the method used to compress them, such as H.264 for video or AAC for audio. In everyday English, people say 'MP4 format' for both.
HD, Full HD, 4K. HD usually means 1280 × 720, Full HD 1920 × 1080, and 4K (in TVs and phones) 3840 × 2160, also called UHD.
3-D graphics. A 3-D model starts as a wireframe, a mesh of lines. Then textures (surfaces) are added, and finally the computer renders the scene with light and shadows. Engineers and architects use CAD (computer-aided design) software in the same way.
Zero or first conditional? For something that always happens, use the zero conditional: If the buffer is empty, the video stops. For one particular future situation, use the first conditional: If we move closer to the router, the video will play better.
