Mathematics and Computers: Why IT Students Need Mathsبیرکاری و کۆمپیوتەر: بۆچی خوێندکاری IT پێویستی بە بیرکارییە؟
What mathematics is, where you meet it every day and what its main branches are; how computers grew out of counting, calculating machines and codebreaking; why games are built from triangles, how scrolling moves pixels and why computers use binary; whether programmers need maths, and which maths each IT field uses.

Why study maths in an IT department?
Many computer students ask the same question: “What does maths have to do with computers? Why must we study it?” People outside computing ask it too. The first two lessons of this course answer that question. They grew out of an essay that an IT student wrote for his statistics class, called Mathematics and Computers (the relationships between them).
Asking what maths has to do with computers is like asking what your parents have to do with you. When you marry, you may move out and build a new life far from their house. But you are still their child: the blood link stays. Computing has moved far from pen-and-paper maths, yet it was born from mathematics and still carries it inside.
Where the analogy stops working
A grown-up child can live without help from the parents. A computer cannot work for a single second without mathematics: every click and every picture on the screen is numbers.

About the essay
The essay opens by thanking a summer-school maths teacher who gave its author hope again after he had given up on maths. If maths once beat you too, keep going: this chapter starts from everyday ideas, not from hard symbols.
At first the essay was called The relationship between mathematics and computers. Its author renamed it so that it could also talk about mathematics and its branches in general. This lesson follows the same plan: what mathematics is, where you meet it every day, its branches, where computers came from, and then the many links between the two.
What is mathematics?
The word mathematics comes from the Greek máthēma, “something learned, knowledge”. In Kurdish we say بیرکاری (also ماتماتیک). Mathematics is a very wide science. It studies quantity (how many, how much), structure such as unknowns and expressions (), shape and space () and change ( and the rest of calculus), and much more.
Mathematics is built on : a statement counts as true only when it is proved step by step from agreed starting points. That is why is the same in every country, every language and every century.
From counting to computers
The word computer comes from to compute: to count and to calculate. That is why Kurdish sometimes calls it پێژمێر or بژمێر, “the counter”. Counting is also where mathematics began: since the first humans, people have counted things such as two hands and two eyes.

People and tools that calculated
Before electronic machines existed, computer was a job title: a person who did long calculations by hand (the word is written this way already in 1613). Tools helped them. Romans moved small pebbles on counting boards; the Latin word calculus means “small pebble”. Later came the abacus, Napier's bones (rods that turn multiplication into addition, 1617) and Pascal's adding machine (1642). Electronic computers were built to do long, boring calculations faster and without mistakes.

Maths in everyday lifeبیرکاری لە ژیانی ڕۆژانەدا
Many people think mathematics is only playing with numbers and a few letters. In fact it is an old, worldwide language for describing and explaining the things around us. Look at one ordinary day:
- Your house. The angles of the walls, the even rows of floor tiles and the building plan were all made with mathematics.
- Health. Doctors use the body-mass index (BMI) and the heart rate (beats per minute).
- Clothes and art. A tailor takes your measurements; a painter fixes a shape with a ruler, special tools or just by eye.
- Cooking. The cook uses quantity: how much salt for how much rice.
- Football. In a split second a player judges the that a pass will reach a teammate or that a shot will go in.

Pure and applied mathematics
Mathematics has two broad kinds. Pure mathematics studies ideas for their own sake: numbers, shapes, patterns and proofs. Applied mathematics uses mathematics to solve real problems in science, engineering, business and computing. The border is soft: prime numbers were studied for fun for centuries, and today they protect online banking.

Logic (from the Greek logikē) is the art and science of reasoning. People use it in every careful activity, but it is studied above all in philosophy, mathematics and computer science. Logic examines ways of arguing and finds the most reliable way to reach the truth about something.

Why games are made of triangles
Not every computer scientist needs geometry. Some fields do, above all : making images with computers, such as , moving objects and .
The simplest shape for building objects in games and animations is the triangle. A game character, a car or a ball is a : many small flat triangles joined at their corners and edges. Why triangles? Any three points always lie on one flat surface, so a triangle can never bend or twist. Every other flat shape can be cut into triangles: a rectangle is two triangles, so the essay's car built from rectangles and squares is triangles inside. And graphics hardware () is built to draw millions of triangles every second.

Scrolling is arithmetic
Right now, while you read this page, a world of calculations runs behind your screen. The screen is a grid of tiny dots called , and each pixel has . On screens the point is the top-left corner: grows to the right and grows downward. (On the coordinate plane of mathematics, grows upward.)
When you scroll, the (with the graphics hardware) works out again where every line of text and every picture must go, pixel by pixel along the x and y axes. If you move the page up by 120 pixels, the computer subtracts 120 from the of everything on it. All of this is done with numbers.
Computers speak binary
A computer stores everything (numbers, letters, pictures, sound) as : 0 or 1. is not a secret code. It is simply another , like the decimal one we use every day, but with two digits instead of ten. The full story is in Logic Design: Number systems. Mathsisfun's binary number system page, which the essay's author kept as a reference, is a good first read too.

|---|---|
| 0 | 0000 |
| 1 | 0001 |
| 2 | 0010 |
| 3 | 0011 |
At the lowest level a processor does only a few simple things with bits: it flips them (0 ↔ 1), shifts them left or right, combines them with logic (AND, OR, NOT, see the next lesson) and adds them. Shifting one place to the left multiplies by 2: becomes . Shifting one place to the right divides by 2: becomes . Even subtraction is done by adding: becomes 6 plus the two's complement of 3.
hide this mathematics from you. When you write total = price * count, you never see a bit, but the CPU still multiplies two binary numbers underneath.
Do programmers need maths?
It depends on the job. Some programmers build apps that are not mathematical at all: a social-media app, an app for reading religious books, a PDF library. Even these use simple mathematics. A food-delivery app counts the items in your basket and sums their prices. Those operations are easy, so such a programmer does not need deep topics like . A programmer who builds games does.

Nobody knows all of mathematics, just as nobody is expected to know every : no human can memorise that much. You learn the mathematics that your field needs, and you can always learn more when a new job needs it.

Some musicians play well by ear, and you can start programming with very little formal maths. The analogy is about going deep: the further you go, the more you need it.

Summary
- Mathematics (Greek máthēma, “knowledge”) studies quantity, structure, shape and change, and it is built on proof.
- Computer comes from compute. People with that job title, pebbles, the abacus, Napier's bones and Pascal's machine came before electronic computers; Colossus broke German codes.
- studies ideas for their own sake; , including statistics, solves real problems.
- Games build every object from triangles; scrolling recalculates pixel coordinates; computers do everything with binary bits.
- Each IT field needs its own mathematics: graphics → linear algebra, AI → calculus, probability, linear algebra; networks → graph theory; data mining → statistics.
