Rezan is a first-year computer science student in Erbil. His laptop is five years old. Its 256 GB drive is almost full, and it takes two minutes to start. Last week he went to a computer shop in the city centre to ask for advice.
The shop assistant, Hana, showed him three options. 'An external is the cheapest per gigabyte,' she said. 'You can get 2 TB for a good price. But it has moving parts inside, so it is not as strong as an SSD. If you drop it, you can lose everything.'
'A portable is much faster and lighter,' she continued. 'It has no moving parts, so it is more reliable when you travel. However, it is more expensive. For the same money, you get about half the .'
'The third option is . Your files are kept on a company's , and you can open them on your phone, your laptop or a library computer. You pay a small monthly fee for more space. But you need a good Internet connection, and the free plans are quite small.'
Rezan thought about it. In the end, he bought a 1 TB portable SSD for his projects and photos. He also turned on the free cloud plan for his most important documents. Now every important is in two places. 'A file that exists in only one place is never safe,' Hana told him.

Some verbs go with files again and again. Learn them as chunks: verb + noun. These word partners are called collocations.

Files are kept in folders, and folders can contain other folders (subfolders). The full address of a file is its path. A file name ends with an extension that shows the file format: .docx (a Word document), .pdf, .jpg (a photo), .mp4 (a video).

Comparatives and superlatives
Use a comparative to compare two things, and a superlative to compare one thing with all the others in a group. In technical English we usually compare measurable features: speed, capacity, size, weight and price.

- much / far / a lot + comparative for a big difference: An SSD is much faster than an HDD. Use slightly / a bit for a small one.
- not as … as is softer and often more polite: A flash drive is not as fast as an SSD.
- the + superlative + of / in: The SSD is the fastest of the four.
- less + adjective for the opposite direction: HDDs are less expensive per gigabyte.
- the + comparative …, the + comparative … for two things that change together: The bigger the file, the longer the upload.
- Contrast and result in writing: SSDs are fast, whereas HDDs are cheap. / SSDs are fast. However, they cost more. / HDDs have moving parts. Therefore, they can break if you drop them.

When you give advice in writing, be clear and polite. Say what the problem is first, then give your advice, then end in a friendly way.

Next time, keep your phone away from water, or use a waterproof case. And make sure your photos are backed up to cloud storage automatically, so you don't lose them even if you lose the phone. A copy on your laptop every week is a good idea, too.

Memory or storage? In everyday speech people say 'my phone has 256 GB of memory', but in technical English memory usually means : fast, temporary, and emptied when the power goes off (volatile). Storage (SSD, HDD, flash, cloud) keeps files when the power is off (non-volatile). Computer science exams such as IGCSE call RAM primary memory, the drive inside the computer secondary storage, and media you can remove (USB drives, memory cards, DVDs) off-line storage.
GB or GiB? Drive makers count 1 GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes. Some operating systems count in powers of two (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes) but still write 'GB'. That is why a new '1 TB' drive shows about 931 GB in Windows. Also keep B (byte) and b (bit) apart: 100 Mb/s is a speed in megabits, about 12.5 MB per second.
Register. To a friend: 'Back up your stuff!' In a company policy: 'Staff must ensure that all work files are backed up daily.' The formal version uses the passive and the verb ensure.
The 3-2-1 rule says: keep 3 copies of important data, on 2 different kinds of storage, with 1 copy in another place (for example, the cloud). Write a short backup policy (4–5 sentences) for a small office in Erbil. Use at least two comparatives and one passive.
