Good question, Shilan! Many people use the two words in the same way, but they are different.

The internet is the network. It is millions of computers, phones and servers around the world, joined by cables, Wi-Fi, mobile networks and satellites. It started in 1969 as a small research network in the USA, called ARPANET.

The Web is one service that runs on the internet. It was invented by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN in 1989, and the first website was opened to the public in 1991. The Web is all the web pages in the world, joined by links. You open them in a , and each page has its own address, called a .

Many other services use the internet but are not part of the Web: email, messaging apps, video calls, online games and music apps.

So your grandfather and your brother are both partly right. When he watches videos in a browser, he is using the Web. And the Web always needs the internet!

The internet is drawn as a road at the bottom. Above it, five services travel on it: the Web, email, file transfer, video calls and online games. You often need to say a web address aloud: on the phone, in class or in a video. English uses special names for the symbols.

What happens between typing an address and seeing the page? It usually takes less than a second, but there are several steps. Notice the passive verbs and the sequence words.

The browser, the DNS server and the web server، و

To describe a process, technical English uses two tools: the passive (is sent, are requested) and sequence words that show the order of the steps.

Time clauses in process descriptions

  • After when, once, as soon as, before and until, use the present simple for a future action: When the download *finishes**, open the file.* (not will finish)
  • Once means “after this is complete”. The present perfect makes that clear: Once you *have saved** your work, close the editor.*
  • When both parts have the same subject, shorten the clause to after / before + -ing: Check the address *before entering** your password.*
  • While and as link two things in the same period of time; as often shows a gradual change: As the video downloads, the picture gets sharper.
  • Put a comma after a time clause at the start of a sentence: When the page opens, click Login. No comma when it comes second: Click Login when the page opens.
